Grin and Bear it – Finding hope in the face of despair

September 2, 2012

How does one cope during trying times, especially when one feels completely without allies?
For the Christian, this is a good time to test the promise written in 1 Corinthians 10:13

“13 No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.”

This is the promise I try to stand firm upon, when I do not see the light at the end of the tunnel. When I become cynical no matter how I view the situation. My prayer is that my mind will be able to think rationally and remember how God has seen me through thick and thin of my short life thus far.

In reality, it’s not that simple. When the darkness engulfs the light, the burden seems unbearable, almost impossible. But the hard truth is that one cannot opt out. To do so would, in my case, compound the problem. In this case, I only have myself to blame. But that doesn’t make things better.

So in the meantime I grin and bear it, and put on a paper smile, being as calm as a duck on the water’s surface, but paddling frantically beneath to stay afloat. Because to do otherwise would mean to ignore the constraints that love brings. It’s frustrating, not to be able to say how you feel. But that’s life sometimes, and I just smile at myself and say “was this what you expected when you signed up?”

So while I am filled with dread at having to fulfil obligations, I pray hard that it won’t be long before it’s over. I need as much grace as I can get.
